How do I choose the right video aspect ratio?

Choose the shape required by the placement: 16:9 for widescreen, 9:16 for a tall frame, 1:1 for square or 4:5 for a shorter portrait composition. ExpandClip supports all four layout presets, separately or together. Aspect ratio changes shape; it does not automatically increase image detail.

Useful for
Planning several placements from one source without assuming every platform needs a separate export.
Composition tip
Choose the formats your placements need. One 9:16 composition can serve TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
THREE STEPS TO YOUR COMPOSITION

How to change video aspect ratio

  1. 01

    Add your source video

The editor reads the clip's dimensions and duration. You can also switch between the example's four output formats to compare their shapes.

  2. 02

    Choose a ratio or several

Select landscape 16:9, vertical 9:16, square 1:1 or portrait 4:5. Use the Outputs row to inspect each selected format.

  3. 03

    Check the composition

Compare subject size and the expansion area. Save your selected formats and estimate as a draft in My videos.

LESS OF THE ORIGINAL

Crop to fill

Fills the frame by trimming the edges. Useful when all the important action fits inside the crop.

THE WHOLE SHOT, WITH FILLER

Fit with a blurred background

Keeps the entire source over a blurred copy. A practical option when you only need a different canvas.

Expand the scene with AI

Plans space for new scenery around the original. AI generation uses credits and the result needs review.

16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5?

Use 16:9 for a wide player or presentation, 9:16 for a full-height vertical composition, 1:1 for a square layout and 4:5 for a taller feed composition. Match the placement rather than assuming every post on a platform needs the same shape.

Aspect ratio versus video resolution

Aspect ratio describes width relative to height. Resolution describes the pixel dimensions. Changing the shape does not automatically sharpen a low-resolution source. Keep those decisions separate when planning an output.

One clip can have several useful formats

Start with the format you need now, then add others for separate placements. Four platforms do not necessarily require four different ratios. If preserving every edge is the main concern, compare the available framing approaches.
